Scio Water: 'I Wouldn't Drink It If You Paid Me To'

While officials wait for filters to correct an ongoing water problem, some Scio residents said they can't stand the smell or sight of the water anymore.

For more than a year, the Harrison County community has dealt with cloudy water that stains clothes and leaves stains in sinks and bathtubs.

Now, people say they've had enough.

"I wouldn't drink it if you paid me to drink it," said one Scio resident.

Village officials said the water department has been operating without filters for more than a year. Compounding the problem is that -- like many areas in the Valley -- the lines that run through the village are more than 100 years old.

Despite that, in its 2006 Consumer Confidence Report, the Environmental Protection Agency said the water was safe to drink.

In May, the village received approval for a series of new filters to be installed.

Mayor Robert Brooks said the company Hydro Mechanics is late on delivering the filters, and said he will take legal action against the company if the filters are not delivered by Aug. 1.
