Sewage Seeps Onto Scio Man's Property

Village Mayor Explains The Reason For Delayed Fix

SCIO, Ohio —

SCIO, Ohio - A weather related obstruction in Scio's main sewage line sent human waste spewing out onto one man's property and down East College Street in Scio.

Fred Mcfarland said the frozen waste has been draining onto his property since earlier this month, and he took the issue to council looking to get it fixed.

"This is tampons and everything laying on the ground. It's been running out of there for four weeks," said Mcfarland.

When he didn't see any changes he said he put up a sign Wednesday that read "Human Waste On Road", and according to him, 12 minutes later crews responded.

"I timed it because I've been told this is the only way you can get stuff done in Scio," said Mcfarland.

But Mayor Bob Hendricks said it wasn't the sign. He said the village tried twice before to fix the line but crews ran into problems with both weather and equipment.

Hendricks said on Wednesday though the independent contractor came with all the necessary tools to pump out the clogged line.

But the mess already left its mark on the roadway and that's left Mcfarland concerned.

"I have two little kids and a wife and they have to walk through this to get to the garage. That's hepatitis and other kinds of potential diseases you can get from that," said Mcfarland.

Hendricks said the stretch of road will be treated with a chlorine mix for decontamination. A crew is expected to be back out at the site on Thursday, weather permitting, for a full assessment.

In the meantime Hendricks apologized for any inconvenience.
