Sheriff Warns of Authentic-Looking Money Orders In Mail

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. —

It looks authentic -- a postal service money order, that comes in an actual express mail package. But when one Ohio County resident received it in the mail, it raised a red flag.

"He wasn't sure about it since there was nothing in the envelope itself indicating what to do with the money orders, he became suspicious," said Ohio County Sheriff Pat Butler.

The sheriff got suspicious too. The money orders say they're from a woman in Louisiana and they're addressed directly to a Triadelphia resident.

"He brought it to me and I contacted the U.S. postal inspectors and checked the money orders online,” Butler said. “They're definitely fraud. They're fake.”

Butler said it's possible that hundreds of the money orders in express mail envelopes will be sent to our area. He wants to get the word out now so that no one is fooled.

We showed the money orders to some local people who said they wouldn’t fall for the scheme.

“I would notify the authorities and I wouldn't do anything other than that with it," said Judy McGrail.

“I’d probably tear it up,” said Sally Peluchette.

"If it's too good to be true, it is. Nobody's going to send you money for anything," Butler said.

Butler added that you may receive a letter may come a couple of days before receiving the money order, telling you what to do when you receive money orders. He said that’s another warning sign that this mail fraud is coming your way.
