WHEELING, W.Va. —

Police are searching for the person or persons who fired gunshots that struck several homes in Wheeling on Monday.

The shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. on Kentucky Street in the north end of Wheeling Island.

Police said two cars were seen fleeing the area after the shooting: a white Cadillac and a dark-colored sport utility vehicle, both of which were being driven by young black men.
Investigators said they found seven shell casings at the intersection of North Huron and Kentucky Street.

Wheeling Police Deputy Chief Martin Kimball said officials are not jumping to any conclusions and the investigation is ongoing, but police think the shooting may be drug-related.

"A lot of people we talked to at the scene have had prior experiences with us, with narcotics, so we can only presume it had something to do with the drug trade," Kimball said.

There were no reported injuries, though neighbors who spoke with NEWS9 said the shooting on their normally quiet street obviously has them shaken up.

William McCauslind showed NEWS9 a bullet that went through his siding, narrowly missing his granddaughter inside.

"It went in the house and hit the television and then through the ceiling. She was in that room," said McCauslind said.

One man showed a hole in the side of his house and his next-door neighbor's screen door glass was shattered.

Some neighbors said they weren't sure what was happening when they heard gunshots then saw police. Mike Schweizer said he was watching the news when he heard the commotion outside.

"There were people just coming out everywhere, police cruisers sitting there, swarming around, pulling cars over trying to figure out and see who was shooting," said Schweizer.

Police are searching for any clues that will help them solve the crime. Anyone with information is asked to call police or the NEWS9 Lauttamus Security Crime Busters Tipline at 800-862-BUST. Tips can also be emailed to crimebusters@wtov.com. Tips are anonymous.
