Slain Boy's Mother Charged With Drug Crime, Probation Violation

The mother of a slain toddler denied allegations that she used illegal drugs and failed to appear for a probation hearing.

Channe Fleischer, who is 7 months pregnant, is the mother of Jacob Fleischer, a 16-month-old who was slain earlier this month.

In court Friday, Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla testified that Fleischer tested positive for high levels of two types of illegal drugs, marijuana and Oxycodon, after her probation officer requested Fleischer undergo a drug test.

Abdalla said the safest place for Fleischer and her unborn baby is in jail.

"Especially if a person doesn't care about themselves," Abdalla said. "But when they are reckless with regard to an unborn baby, it is disturbing."

The child's father, Fred Roman, of Toronto, is accused of killing the couple's toddler with blunt force trauma to the head.

The boy was placed in Roman's custody in April after Fleischer was convicted of permitting drug abuse and child endangerment.

Fleischer was later put on probation and was supposed to check into a rehabilitation program, but officials said she never did. Police said for that reason, the boy was staying with Roman.

Both parents were scheduled to settle their custody agreements in July.

Fleischer's next court appearance is set for Thursday. She remains jailed on $7,500 bond and officials said she can not be released until her assessment is complete.
