WEIRTON, W.Va. —

A trash fire in a boy's restroom prompted the evacuation of Weir High School on Tuesday.

Hancock County Schools Superintendent Sue Smith said an administrator smelled smoke or some type of odor around lunchtime. The Weirton Department was called, and the school was evacuated.

Fire crews swept the entire school and found garbage smoldering in a boy's restroom on the second floor of B-Building.

While crews were checking the school, police cruisers blocked the entrance to Red Rider Road, and high school students and faculty were sent next door to Weir Middle School's gymnasium.

"We are very fortunate with the campus style that we have the two schools that we don't have to send students home. So if there is something -- in order to be on the safe side -- we have ample room in order to place the students that we can wait and let them be safe while the building is checked, and that's what we did," Smith said.

About an hour after the incident, fire crews determined the school was safe and allowed students to return to class.

As of Tuesday afternoon, officials said they couldn't pinpoint what caused the trash to catch fire or determine if someone started it. Smith said the incident will be investigated.

There were no reported injuries or property damage, and school will be held as scheduled on Wednesday.
