Some Ohio Co. students get free dental work thanks to grant-funded program

By NEWS9

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. —

Some Ohio County Schools elementary students had dental work done at no cost thanks to a grant given to the school system.

Students were able to have a sealant put on their teeth for free through the county's dental clinic.

The program at Madison Elementary launched on Wednesday with grant money from the Appalachian Regional Commission, the Claude Benedum Foundation and the governor's office.

The program is still in its early stages and the school's dental hygienist hopes it can soon expand countywide.

"We're trying to prevent tooth decay, were trying to prevent this common childhood disease, and if we put a sealant on a tooth, there is a good chance we won't see it decay in the future," said Mancy LaBrosse, RDH, M.A. and Ohio County Schools dental hygienist.

Madison Elementary was chose as the starter school because it's considered a high-risk school.
