Spa Profits Benefit Local College

WHEELING, W.Va. —

Beyond the cushy waiting room, the flowing water and the soft music, Oglebay’s new West Spa is a spa with a cause.

"The net profit goes to West Liberty State College students who work for Oglebay," said donor Gary West.

West is a 1958 West Liberty graduate. The $4 million addition of the West Spa and several suites to Oglebay Park all started with a gift from West. And it's a gift that will keep on giving.

"I think it's very important to help those that helped you," he said.

The spa benefits the college's Earn to Learn program, helping students gain paid work experience.

Oglebay employees said the spa will help keep Oglebay Park competitive with other area resorts -- helping to draw in people from Pittsburgh, Columbus and Cleveland.

"I think it's great that he's thought of his community and also where he went to school and his roots," said Caren Knoyer, Oglebay's marketing director.

West now lives in Florida, but said he never thought twice about coming back to the Valley to help the college and Oglebay Park.

"If it wasn't for West Liberty I wouldn't have been in business. If it wasn't for the park, it would have been a lonely life in Wheeling, West Virginia,” West said.
