Special Assignment: Putting Sanitizers To The Test

With both the seasonal flu and swine flu spreading throughout the Ohio Valley, health officials say one of the biggest lines of defense is washing your hands.

Local folks say that they’ve been spending extra time at the sink, in hopes of not getting sick.

“I wash my hands, often, often, often,” said Nancy Longo.

NEWS9 crews put three products to the test, liquid anti-bacterial soap, waterless hand sanitizer, and a bar of anti-bacterial soap.

The results – showed all of them killed bacteria, but the best results came from the waterless hand sanitizer.

Health officials recommend washing your hands for 30 seconds, or two rounds of the song "Happy Birthday."

An important note is that the products NEWS9 tested kill bacteria, and not viruses like the flu.

But experts said that if you are getting rid of bacteria, chances are you could be getting rid of the germs that cause viruses.
