Sportsmen's club, drilling company face off in court

By Briona Arradondo NEWS9 and Ali Myers

HARRISON COUNTY, Ohio --

The fight over who owns the surface rights to the Jewett Sportsman Club continued in a Harrison County courtroom on Thursday.

Chesapeake Energy called several witnesses to the stand by noon, including an operations manager and an engineer with the company.

Officials with Chesapeake said it is legally allowed to access the land in order to drill for natural gas based on an agreement made decades ago. But, the sportsmen's club said that agreement has expired.

Chesapeake wants to operate two well pads on the property. Each pad would be 8-10 acres, and those well pads would drill horizontally and vertically. A Chesapeake operations manager said some equipment and pipelines could remain on the property for up to 30 years.

Chesapeake is claiming it acquired an extensive amount of the Jewett Sportsman Club property under a lead. The company said it looked for other places in Harrison County to drill, but issues with the land being too close to homes arose.

Officials said it could be a few days before a court decision is made. Stay with NEWS9, WTOV9.com and WTOV9.com Mobile for continuing coverage.
