Starbucks mugs save East Liverpool company

By Alex Koscevic

EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio —

American Mug is a small company in the Ohio Valley, which employed about eight people. That's until Starbucks chose the company to produce a new mug for its stores.

American Mug owner Clyde McClellan said it was a surreal opportunity to work with Starbucks, but he let the company know that, due to a small staff and no modern equipment, the company couldn't mass-produce quickly.

"He (Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz) realized immediately that we were not a prototypical Starbucks supplier -- that we had severe limitations in the ability to produce large numbers of items," McClellan said.

Starbucks asked for 20,000 mugs in the first order, and that meant more help was needed at the factory.

"We were able to hire eight new employees," McClellan said. "On that national scene, that doesn't seem like a lot, butĀ for a company that had 12 or 13 people, eight is jumping it quite a bit."

This opportunity is helping American Mug in more ways than one, McClellan said. Every time someone purchases one of the Indivisible mugs, Starbucks will make a donation to the Create Jobs for USA program, which helps give loans out to small businesses.

Schultz released a statement in which he said, "In these troubling economic times, we believe that we can all do our part to help make a positive impact on the jobs crisis facing our country. The Create Jobs for USA program is helping thousands of Americans get back to work."

While these orders have created more jobs for American Mug, they've also helped the company get a loan, giving the company has the opportunity to grow even more.
