State highway officials asked to focus on Route 2 turn in Hancock Co.

By Kelly Camarote

NEW CUMBERLAND, W.Va. —

Del. Randy Swartzmiller of Hancock County announced Wednesday that he's asked state highway officials to focus their attention on eliminating the 90-degree turn on Route 2 in New Cumberland.

Swartzmiller said he contacted the Cabinet Secretary of the West Virginia Division of Highways last week. He requested that they research ways to straighten the road so that heavy truck traffic can avoid the hill and 90-degree turn in the middle of town.

"It was a project that was on the book several years ago," said Swartzmiller. "Because of funding, it got pulled. And don't get me wrong; funding will still be an issue here but we really need to come up with a true solution to the problem."

James Merten, a man living in New Cumberland, described the problem that large trucks can have as they drive through New Cumberland.

"They go to swing too wide," said Merten. "They can't make the turn because it's not a wide enough turn. They need to either take the corner out on the side or widen it out so the trucks can make the turn."

Swartzmiller said he wants the state to come up with a solution before someone gets hurt.

"Up to now, we've just had infrastructure damage on the concrete and sidewalks," said Swartzmiller. "We don't want this to get to the point where we actually have someone get hurt or possibly killed."
