Sterling China Company Demolished

WELLSVILLE, Ohio —

For nearly 80 years, the Sterling China Company was one of Wellsville's largest employers. But after years of vacancy, the building is being torn down.

Local resident Rick Arnett is hoping the demolition is a sign of progress.

"If it's for the betterment of the community, its fine, but I know my brother, and a lot of people I know, lost jobs down there," Arnett said.

The plant closed in 2004.

An effort was made to keep the plant open in 2005, but the deal fell through.

The building has been vacant ever since, creating an eyesore and a playground for vandalism.

"There's been a lot of vandalism as you can see. Kids there breaking into it and they put blockages on the door, so they couldn't get into it," Arnett said.

Currently, there are no finalized plans for the site.
