STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

A Steubenville man is being held on $500,000 bail on drugs and weapons charges.

Geary Harper was arraigned in municipal court on Friday morning. Harper is facing numerous charges after the Jefferson County Drug Task Force raided an apartment on Monday and found cocaine, crack cocaine and two guns.

Harper was arrested after the raid. Steubenville Police Chief Bill McCafferty said, "We had to chase him. He had a significant amount of drugs on him when he was apprehended and then after further investigation by the task force, he's being charged with another 8.5 ounces worth of crack cocaine."

McCafferty said on Monday, task force detectives seized 120 grams of cocaine and 121 grams of crack cocaine at the Brady Avenue apartment. The drugs have a street value of about $20,000.

"That's a lot of crack. Mostly lately we've been getting a lot of heroin. Heroin use is way up in the past few years -- all over the country, not just here. (Heroin) is definitely becoming a major problem," McCafferty said.

The task force located a handgun and an assault rifle which was reported stolen, so Harper is facing two additional charges of weapons under disability.

According to the judge, Harper was already scheduled to appear in court Friday for other charges against him. If found guilty on all charges, Harper could spend at least 20 years in prison.

A preliminary hearing is set for Tuesday morning. Stay with NEWS9, WTOV9.com and WTOV9 Mobile for continuing coverage.
