STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

Steubenville police are stepping up their search for a man accused of attempted murder who is believed to be armed and dangerous.

Antonio Johnson was indicted on Wednesday by a Jefferson County grand jury on charges of attempted murder, felonious assault, having a weapon under a disability and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle.

The case began with an incident in Steubenville's Hilltop neighborhood a few weeks ago in which two people were shot at with an AK-47 assault rifle.

Nearly every law enforcement agency in the Ohio Valley has been notified about Johnson, and more than a dozen law enforcement officers have been looking for him.

"Mr. Johnson is charged with firing an assault weapon in a residential neighborhood. He could have easily killed a number of residents in that neighborhood. There were children outside at the time. He knows that he is wanted. He continues to evade police," Jefferson County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin said.

Thursday night, with help from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Marshals Service and the Jefferson County Drug Task Force, Steubenville police were able to search multiple homes for Johnson. The search targeted public housing along North Sixth Street and Sherman Avenue in the city.

A second man, Stedmund Creech, is also wanted by police in connection with the shooting incident.

Jefferson County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin said Creech is currently under indictment for weapons charges and drug trafficking charges and has not turned himself in to his parole officer.

"Both of them are known to carry weapons. Both of them have been in prison before. … Johnson on drug and gun charges (and) Stedmund Creech for felonious assault and drug charges. Both (are) considered to be armed and dangerous," Hanlin said.

Hanlin said she doesn't expect Johnson or Creech to turn themselves in, especially since both men face jail sentences. If convicted, Creech could get more than five years in prison and Johnson could get more than 20 years.

"We know that a number of people in the community are afraid to speak out, but we believe with a little bit of help from the community and cooperation from (the) police department, we can get these people off the street before they actually kill some innocent person who just happens to be standing outside when this happens," Hanlin said.

Anyone with information on Johnson's whereabouts is asked to call police or the NEWS9 Lauttamus Security Crime Busters Tipline at 800-862-BUST. Tips can also be emailed to crimebusters@wtov.com.
