Steubenville Shooting

18 year old Heather Bailey of Weirton initially told Steubenville detectives a stranger approached her on the street, shot her, and then took off. After her release from the hospital, Bailey tells police there is more to the incident.

Police say Bailey tells them she was dropped off on the corner of Fifth and South streets around 10-o-clock on the night of March 23, 2005. Bailey tells police a man approached her and asked her if she wanted to buy some crack cocaine. Bailey tells police she told the man his crack wasn't real, and that's when she says he shot her in her pelvic region as he was talking on a cell phone.

Police learned of the shooting when officers pulled over a car on Adams street that was driving erratically. Police found Bailey wounded inside the car, and the driver told police he was trying to rush Bailey to the hospital. Detectives surveyed the scene and couldn't find anyone who witnessed the shooting. They have since recovered a bullet from a 22 caliber gun that they believe struck the victim.

Steubenville Police Chief Bill McCafferty says Bailey has been extremely cooperative and wants to pursue the incident. She was initially taken to Trinity Medical Center for treatment, and was then transported to a Pittsburgh hospital. Bailey has been released from the hospital and is home safely.

As for the gunman, no arrests have been made and police are still searching.
