STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

Mayor Domenick Mucci, 54, of Steubenville is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. Monday to answer to charges of operating a vehicle under the influence and failure to control.

According to a Steubenville police report, at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Mucci struck a parked vehicle near the intersection of Ridge and Reserve avenues, which is within the city limits.

When officers responded, they reported that Mucci’s speech was slurred and that they observed an odor of alcohol on his breath.

Mucci was given a field sobriety test and “showed a lack of smooth pursuit,” according to the police report. The report went onto say he declined to perform the “one leg test” and refused to take a breath test.

Mucci was then placed under arrest and taken to the Steubenville police station where he was processed then released.

A paramedic unit was called to the scene, but Mucci did not need medical attention.

The mayor’s blood alcohol level was not noted in the police report.

Steubenville City Manager Cathy Davison spoke to NEWS9 by phone on Sunday and said she and the City Council are aware of the situation involving the mayor. She confirmed Mucci remains active as the city’s mayor and has not stepped aside. She said she spoke to Mucci by phone and that he’s looking at his options.

Davison said the Steubenville Police Department handled the accident and arrest based on law and that proper protocol was followed.

According to NEWS9 archives, this is at least the third time Mucci has been arrested for charges related to drunk driving. In 1996, the Ohio State Highway Patrol pulled Mucci over for suspicion of driving drunk. A judge later sentenced Mucci to 10 days in jail, because at the time it was his second offense.

At the time of the 1996 traffic stop and arrest, Mucci reportedly told an OSHP trooper that “I should have learned my lesson the first time.” Five years prior, in the early 1990s, Mucci was arrested on similar charges in Belmont County.

NEWS9 tried to contact Mucci by phone Sunday but was unable to reach him.

Sources told NEWS9 that Mucci had attended a cancer benefit earlier Saturday evening.
