Stinkbugs here to stay, but pesky problem can be minimized

By NEWS9

While experts say stinkbugs may be less prevalent during certain seasons, the pesky critters aren't expected to go away anytime soon.

The recent stretch of wet weather has decreased the number of insects, but among the 33 states where stinkbugs are, some -- including West Virginia -- have reported the biggest problem.

On a positive note, stinkbugs aren't expected to ruin large numbers of crops as originally thought, and they are less visible in some seasons. Six months ago, when NEWS9 first covered the outbreak, an entomologist at Pest Solutions said they're getting a little worse each year.

"Until we find something that's going to keep them in check, I'd expect them to be a little worse than they have been," said Dale Hodgson, regional technical manager.

Hodgson was right -- th bugs have been more prevalent -- but more recently, there have been more devices hitting the market claiming to trap the pests. One called Rescue is touted by its manufacturer as being most effective from September through early spring, when stinkbugs migrate inside for the winter.

The goal of the Rescue trap is to attract stinkbugs with an LED light, then they're trapped inside the device until a person empties it.

Like many buildings, WTOV9 has some stinkbugs and tested the trap. After putting the device in a dark closet -- an area where there were stinkbugs -- the device didn't trap any of the pests over an entire weekend.

NEWS9 also tried for a few hours on Monday, keeping the device inside of a vehicle where the bugs were spotted, but again, no stinkbugs were trapped.

While the $18 trap didn't work well for NEWS9, the company said it has worked for others.

To minimize stinkbugs in homes, the website stinkbugremoval.org suggests the following:

- To keep them from coming in, check to make sure there are no gaps in windows or baseboards. If so, use a sealant.

- Place mesh over gutters and foundation.

- Because stink bugs are attracted to leaves of decorative plants, check any flowers and plants brought into a home.

- Exterminators said fall is the best time for outdoor extermination of stinkbugs.
