Stores Plan To Keep Offering Deals

Across the country, many stores are reporting higher-than expected sales on this year's Black Friday. Many people had low expectations due to the rising unemployment rates. That's also why some stores say they'll keep their deals on the table all the way up to Christmas.

Bonnie Eltringham, Manager of Christopher and Banks at Fort Steuben Mall, said, "We weren't real busy when we opened the doors but we saw a steady flow throughout the day."

Eltringham has seen a change in the buying habits of her customers on Black Friday when the economy fell.

Eltringham said, "We have seen how people used to come in and buy the complete outfit, even like one or two outfits, and now we're cutting down and just buying pieces instead of the whole thing."

That's why Christopher and Banks is changing the way they do business by offering more promotions.

Eltringham said, "I see more business with the coupons and different promotions than what we did in the past. Plus, that gets the name of our store out there and draws them in here."

Better deals are just fine for their customers like Cheryl Schreiber.

Schreiber said, "Hopefully, you're going to get better bargains because there's less people out. The people are going to need to move their merchandise and hopefully there's going to be bargains clear up until Christmas."

Schreiber hit the stores on Black Friday early in the morning and then again Saturday in search of more deals.

Schreiber said, there were "a lot of shoppers in the 4 to 8 o'clock range, but then a couple stores I went into after 10 or 11 were a little emptier than I would have thought."

Across Fort Steuben Mall at Hibbetts Sports, employees were happy with the turnout, but they still want to help their customers save some cash.

Hibbett Sports Employee Lindsey Osso said, "Still going on throughout most of the holiday season, most of our college apparel is on sale and a lot of our sales racks are an extra 25 percent off the already lower prices."

Several retailers across the country including Old Navy and Walmart, stayed open on Thanksgiving to attract extra customers and offer more deals.
