Strickland Touts Job Retraining During College Visit

Governor Returns Fire Against GOP Critics

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

After Tuesday's State of the State Address, Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland made a beeline for the Ohio Valley, with a visit to Eastern Gateway Community College in Steubenville.

Strickland visited a class where students were learning how to be electrical linemen.

"We've got to make sure individuals who previously worked in one setting are trained to work in other settings," Strickland said.

Strickland, now nearing the end of his first term is working to convince Ohioans that the economy and job market will improve.

"Ohio and Ohioans did not cause this recession," Strickland said. "It was caused by the greed of Wall Street. But we are paying for it, sadly."

Strickland faces a fight in his re-election bid.

Republican John Kasich, who is leading in very early polls, posted a scathing reply on his Web site.

"We heard him (Strickland) say 'it's not my fault.' He blamed everyone else," said Kasich in the online clip. "He refused to accept personal responsibility for what he's failed to do over the three years he's been in office."

Strickland welcomed the challenge.

"I'm happy to talk to John Kasich about his past as a Wall Street banker and my efforts," said Strickland. "I have been working for the people of this Valley and all across Ohio."

Strickland also addressed rumors about the future of Eastern Gateway's Jefferson County campus and whether it might be relocated to Warren, Ohio.

The governor said that was not the case and reaffirmed his commitment to the local campus.
