Students wear red to raise awareness about drug abuse

By NEWS9

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

Students at a Jefferson County elementary school wore red on Wednesday to raise awareness about drug abuse.

The theme of this year's Red Ribbon Week at West Elementary School is "Smarties Don't Do Drugs."

As part of the week's events, Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla spoke to the kids about drug awareness and drug abuse.

School officials said talking about drugs to elementary students is especially important.

"As the students get older, there's a higher risk of them having exposure to these things. We want to make them aware of it," said Principal Jason Kovalski.

School officials said they believe that education is the best way to get the message about drug abuse across to their students.
