JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —

School officials said seven Edison Local High School students have been suspended for drinking alcohol on school property during an event students organized.

The punishment was handed down after a quick investigation by school administrators, Superintendent Bill Beattie said.

Beattie would not go into detail about who was involved, but he said some are student athletes and all of them are juniors and seniors.

"The Edison Local School District and the Board of Education is not going to tolerate (drinking alcohol on school property)," Beattie said.

He said the students who were caught drinking were there for a Powder Puff football practice that students organized.

"There were numerous activities that day, and our administration received a phone call. … They brought it to our attention," Beattie said. "There were no adults involved in the activity."

The game is played every year in October by female students who are coached by male students, and all are juniors and seniors. Beattie says a number of those involved came forward to admit their wrong doing.

"We're certainly going to look at our policies as far as after-school use of our facilities. We are going to discuss whether there has to be an adult or staff members on hand," Beattie said.

He said the Powder Puff game will still be played on Thursday. The students that have been suspended will not participate.
