STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —
Crowds in a sea of red and black gathered for the "Stand Up for Steubenville Youth" rally at Jim Wood Park Saturday afternoon to show their support for the community.
It was the second rally aimed at uniting the city's youth after recent events tied to the teen rape investigation.
"I started the event three weeks ago, but as you know, last Tuesday, it became a lot more personal," said organizer Jackie Sacripanti, who has a child in the city schools.
Sacripanti shared her thoughts on the school lockdown earlier this week and the eye on Steubenville from the teen rape investigation.
"A lot of people are concerned for the safety of their kids. A lot of innocent children, just because they attended Steubenville City school systems, are being targeted and it's not fair," said Sacripanti.
Strong words echoed as speakers from the community, school and city took the podium, reflecting on the events surrounding the case.
"Our whole thing is hope, prayer, prosperity in the community. So that's the difference between here," said supporter Dawud Abdullah. "(There is) none of that pointing fingers and putting people down where we've got to look at them as a victim, and we got to go get them."
Supporters say they want children to feel safe, and the message was summed up in one word.
"Positive. That's the thing that people have to remember. There’s a lot of positive things going on in the town. There's a lot of positive people in the town, and that's what this is about, being positive," said Ricardo Collins, a Steubenville resident.
Jefferson County Behavioral Health officials attended the rally and passed out pamphlets with information about their available services to anyone who feels affected by the recent events.
