Surveillance video released of community college break-in

By Philip Stahl

WHEELING, W.Va. --

Wheeling police are still searching for a man who burglarized a local community college and spray-painted several surveillance video camera lenses over the weekend.

The surveillance video, which was released to NEWS9 on  Monday, shows  a man wearing a dark hooded jacket and jeans. Police said they are hoping the video will reveal a clear image of the burglar.

The break-in happened early Saturday at West Virginia Northern Community College's B&O building. Police said the man pried open a window on the first floor and spray-painted all of the surveillance cameras in the hallway.

Deputy Chief Marty Kimball of the Wheeling Police Department said the burglar was inside the building for about 50 minutes before an alarm went off.

Investigators said the burglar tried and failed to break into an ATM.

"A grinding machine was used to try to attempt to enter the money vault. They were unsuccessful," Kimball said.

The burglar then tried to enter the bookstore but at that time, the alarm sounded and he fled.

When police first responded to the alarm, they found nothing, but about an hour later a custodian called police to report the college had been burglarized.

"Employees arrived at work in the morning and found that the cameras inside had been spray-painted and that the ATM  in the lobby had been pr i ed open," Kimball said. "One of our difficulties is when the alarm went off, no key holder showed up to let us into the building to let us check it. Was the subject still inside? Maybe, but we would have found the crime earlier."

Classes were canceled on Saturday as investigators looked into the incident, but were back on schedule Monday.

Officials said they are still checking to see if the burglar was caught on any other security cameras in the building that were not vandalized.

"Detectives were called out to process the scene. We are trying to get internal video from the school before they were painted," Kimball said.
