Suspect Caught After Jumping From Window

Police Nab Hospital Escape Suspect

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

Richard Schoonover is back in police custody after eluding them for a week.

Acting on a tip, Wintersville police located Schoonover at a home on Floyd St.

Schoonover attempted to flee by jumping from a second floor window and was injured in the fall, police said.

He's being treated at Trinity Medical Center West.

Schoonover, 36, escaped from police custody while inside Trinity Medical Center West on the morning of April 23.

Schoonover had been arrested the previous night on drug paraphernalia charges.

He complained of chest pains while he was being processed, so police took him to a hospital.

When Schoonover went to use the restroom, several toilets clogged and Schoonover took off.

"Somehow he was able to confuse the officers and he escaped on foot wearing the orange jumpsuit," said Steubenville Police Chief Bill McCafferty.

He didn't keep his jumpsuit on for long.

McCafferty said Schoonover tried to steal a Toyota Rav4, which police found near a BP gas station on Sunset Boulevard.

A neighbor said she knew something was going on as soon as she saw the Toyota's door open.

"I heard some noises like someone was kicking in a door, so I looked outside and saw the Toyota stuck in the gravel," said Lisa Withers. "All of a sudden the door opened and someone took off running naked."

Schoonover has been wanted in Steubenville on minor violations and also in West Virginia on a parole violation.
