Table Gaming Debate Under Way

CHARLESTON, W.Va. —

The table gaming debate is officially under way in the West Virginia legislature.

The state House and Senate introduced the bill in a ceremony in Charleston Tuesday afternoon.

The bill calls for a local vote in the state's four racetrack counties, including Hancock and Ohio. It does allow for a recall vote after five years.

Under the proposal, current track employees would get first dibs at table gaming jobs and would initially distribute the state lottery tax revenue among local police and firefighters' pensions.

Among those present at the ceremonial introduction of the bill were Wheeling Island Race Track President and General Manager Bob Marshall.

State delegate Randy Swartzmiller of Hancock County, who introduced the bill, said he expects one point of debate to be how the state's share of table gaming profits is divided up. Another potential sticking point may be the local option provision that only residents of racetrack counties could vote.
