STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —
The family of Leah Lacko, a girl who survived a brutal beating by her mother's boyfriend in 2005, released video documenting alleged abuse by a physical therapist last year.
Lacko's guardian, Sandy Wells, said the family decided to release the video in an effort to stop abuse from happening to anyone else.
"It plays over in my mind the things that (the therapist) did," said Wells. The alleged incident happened at the School of Bright Promise in Jefferson County. Debra Copeland, a physical therapist at the school, was accused of three counts of child endangerment.
"Leah doesn't deserve it," said Wells. "When (Leah) was 16 months old, her mother's boyfriend beat her up. She had a couple strokes so they had to remove almost half of her brain... The jerking movements (Leah) makes, she has no control over."
The attorney representing Leah and her family, David Mascio, said all kinds of questionable behavior is apparent in two videos that are each approximately 10 minutes long. The videos were secretly shot by an intern working at the School of Bright Promise and then turned over to investigators with the Steubenville Police Department.
"You'll see smacking. You'll see pinching," said Mascio. "(The therapist) physically pulls the pants away and the diaper that this 8-year-old child has to wear to look to make sure there are no marks from the smack."
Wells said Leah was quiet in the video compared to her typical animated movements and sounds.
"When she's quiet, that's how we know something is wrong," said Wells. "It's unforgivable because she knows what Leah went through and this is like putting the whole family through it again."
NEWS9 reached out to the attorney representing Copeland, Francesca Carinci. Carinci declined NEWS9's request for an interview or written statement.
