TARGET9 INVESTIGATION: Barnesville Police Work With NYPD To Solve Identity Theft Crime

BARNESVILLE, OH —

Angie Burkhart is breathing a big sigh of relief.

"I just won't have to worry about it anymore," she said. "Ten years is long enough."

Since 1996, Burkhart says a man from New York has been using her identity to sign up for credit cards, but thanks to a TARGET9 Investigation, she is about to get her identity back.

"No one would help me until they saw it on the news," Burkhart said.

"The lieutenant had seen the story with Eric Minor and contacted Ms. Burkhart to come and see what we could do for her," said Barnesville Police Officer Paul Waryck.

Now, police in New York are also on the case.

"I'm working with a detective from Queens, New York, to possibly get a warrant issued for the man responsible," said Waryck.

Barnesville police are taking the case even farther by working through the Ohio Law Enforcement Gateway (OH-LEG).

OH-LEG is a new program aimed at stopping identity theft by issuing a new passport to victims that no one can steal. The passport is very similar to a license, but it comes with finger print identification.

"It basically gives them a secure ID," said Waryck. "Any time they're having financial problems they can have their name cleared up with the creditors."

Police say the OH-LEG ID is free to any Ohio resident who has been a victim of identity theft.
