A local high school teenager is in jail facing serious sex charges after an incident police said happened this summer in Wheeling.

Cody Allen Brautigam, 18, is charged with two counts of first-degree sexual abuse and two counts of first-degree sexual assault.

Brautigam is a senior at Wheeling Park High School in Ohio County.

According to court documents, a 9-year-old girl and an 8-year-old girl said Brautigam touched them and sexually assaulted them at least five times in July. The girls approached a school counselor about the alleged incidents earlier in September.

West Virginia State Police Sgt. Scott Adams said the investigation started on Sept. 13, and Brautigam was taken out of class and arrested Thursday morning outside of the high school.

Adams said officials typically don't make arrests at schools unless they believe it's imperative.

"Mr. Brautigam was living place to place. We weren't sure of his local, but we were sure he was going to be at the high school that day," Adams said. "He was arrested without incident and I waited until we got him outside the high school to handcuff him."

Brautigam was booked in the West Virginia Northern Regional Jail, where he remained on Friday afternoon. Ohio County Magistrate Patricia Murphy set his bond at $100,000.

Adams said other charges are possible and said, "There was obviously more than one incident in this case and I believe there were several incidents, so at this time we are going to stick with the four charges."
