BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio —

A teen is charged after a 10-year-old boy was shot with a BB from a pellet gun in Martins Ferry.

Police said the boy had just stepped off the school bus on the first day of school when he was shot. Martins Ferry police said the incident happened around 3 p.m. on Cemetery Road.

"(He) heard what he thought was a BB gun sound and seconds later felt something hit his shoulder," said Police Chief John McFarland.

After realizing he'd been hit with something, this child went home and told his mother what happened. But there was another parent in the area who saw someone with some sort of gun.

"(That person) was able to witness a gentleman standing on the back porch with a pellet gun in his hand," said McFarland.

Police were called to area and took a 17-year-old into custody. McFarland said the teen admitted to shooting a BB gun but said he didn't intend to hit a child.

He was transported to the Sargus Juvenile Detention Center on an intentional charge of aggravated assault. McFarland said there's a reason that warning labels on these types of devices advise parental supervision.

"You have to have better sense than that," McFarland said.

The Belmont County prosecutor will have the final say as to what degree of assault the juvenile will be charged with, if any.
