CHESTER, W.Va. —
Hancock County fire investigators are still determining what caused a tent filled with fireworks to catch fire overnight Saturday.
Dispatchers said the blaze started around midnight at the corner of Harris Road and Fulton Lane in front of Shorty's Bar, igniting hundreds of fireworks.
Amy Sickelsmith, who lives nearby, said, "We ran outside to see what was (happening) and really didn't know. We just stood here and watched it. There was nothing really we could do. All we could do is stand there and watch."
The tent was destroyed, but the owners of Shorty's Bar said the bar's steel roof and brick walls for saving the building form any serious damage.
Lore Krause, a bartender who was working at Shorty's at the time, said, "(We're) happy that no one was hurt. … There was minor injuries to the building and stuff but (we're) glad that nobody was hurt."
Workers and neighbors said they were thankful there were no injuries.
Sickelsmith said, "My kids weren't here but there were other kids around at the time and they were shooting pretty far. They were skidding across the road and they were also shooting back over the houses and stuff. … It was scary."
The Lawrenceville Fire Department, with assistance from Chester firefighters, responded to the blaze and was able to douse the flames within minutes. Lawrenceville fire officials said a joint investigation with the state fire marshal should start early this week, and a cause and origin of the fire is under investigation.
Sickelsmith said the situation could have been a lot worse but it's a scene they'll never forget.
"It was the greatest grand finale ever," she said.
