Toronto police nearly triple arrests; crimes on the rise

TORONTO, Ohio —

Toronto police nearly tripled their number of arrests in the past two years.  Officials said they are doing the most with the numbers they have on their force, and they continue to crack down on rising crime.

Heroin and other drugs continue to be an increasing issue in Toronto, and police said drugs are motivating the recent crimes they've seen a spike in over the last few months.

Police Chief Randy Henry said there are more reports of thefts from businesses coming into his office. People are also stealing money and GPS devices from unlocked cars in residential streets, typically in the early morning hours, to resell.

But police have a stronger presence on the streets as a result of some reorganization, Henry said.

"We're a small town, so we've got limited resources ... we were able to change our staffing. We took a juvenile officer, did away with that position and put him on the road. We had a dispatcher that was manned by an officer 12 hours a day. We switched that to 911," Henry said.

He said his department became more aggressive with its policies, resulting in a high number of arrests last year.

The police chief said there was no added cost to reassign his officers to other posts, and it helped free more officers to patrol at night.
