Transformer move causes Hancock Co. traffic woes

By Jeff Bowers

HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. --

Flanked on all sides by police and sheriff's deputies with flashing lights, a transformer transport slowed down traffic in Hancock County on Thursday.

Crews transported it from New Cumberland, down Route 2, on to Wylie Ridge Road and to a substation. And though officers were stationed at several intersections to keep things moving, a long line of cars trailed behind the large load.

"It takes a while because the vehicle only moves about 15 miles per hour," Sheriff Mike White said.

White said officials try to divert traffic the best they can, but that's not always an option.

"Unfortunately, when you're right on Route 2, there's not a whole lot of area to divert from. But, we do have the ability to keep some of the traffic moving," he said.

This is the third transformer to make the trek this week, and each time a plan is put in place to minimize the inconvenience to drivers.

"Each time, it's getting a little quicker and a little fast. Apparently, we're doing something right," White said. "We just formulate a plan on how to keep the flow of traffic as undisrupted as we can because we don't want to [stop traffic completely], but sometimes we do have to."
