BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio —

Trial continued on Thursday for a Belmont County commissioner accused of throwing a bottle at a liquor control agent during Jamboree in the Hills.

Matt Coffland previously pleaded not guilty to a fourth-degree felony charge of assault on a peace officer after he was indicted by a grand jury.

A jury was selected on Wednesday, and officials said the trial could wrap up today.

Witnesses were called to the stand, and one described seeing a can flung through the area, but she wasn't 100 percent sure that Coffland threw it.

A second witness with the Ohio Liquor Control Commission testified that he saw Coffland glaring at the other agents before he saw him throw the can in their general direction. He testified that he was sure it was Coffland.

Coffland is running for re-election to the Belmont County Commission. He had requested a trial date before the November election. The original trial date was set for Nov. 7, which is one day after the general election.
