Troopers In Full Force, Reach 100 MPH To Catch Speeder

This holiday weekend drivers should prepare to see a lot of police cruisers -- they're out in full force.

NEWS9 went behind the wheel with Ohio State Highway Patrol Friday night -- busting myths and reaching speeds of 100 mph just to catch up with speeders.

"Since 3 o'clock, we've handled two minor crashes so far and have arrested one DUI driver," said Sgt. Jason Greenwood.

That was just the beginning of the shift. Troopers are working around the clock this weekend looking for aggressive and impaired drivers.

NEWS9 asked Greenwood to bust some myths. First, he said there is no quota they have to meet. They’re not out to write a bunch of speeding tickets.

"The officers have the discretion over whether or not to issue a warning or write a citation," said Greenwood.

Another myth busted -- in Ohio you're not safe from the radar if you're on the opposite side of the highway and they can track you as they pass you.

"I have a switch. I can turn it on and track cars coming at me, and after they pass I can turn the antenna on in the rear and check their speed as they're going away from me," said Greenwood.

Interstate 70 is a priority this weekend and that's where we caught a Franklin County mom going 73 mph in a 55 mph construction zone.

Greenwood said she told him she had a clean driving record, but a check in the system showed she's had four moving violations in the past two years. She got a ticket.

Just minutes after that stop, the cruiser was in overdrive as a description came across the radio. Troopers were on the lookout for a motorcycle rider dressed in all black -- clocked at 130 mph.

Greenwood sped up to 100 mph while troopers from several different directions prepared to hone in on the rider. Once they got him stopped, troopers said the rider told them he thought he was only going 80 mph.

The ticket will cost him $175.
