Troopers: Unsafe Speed Caused Fatal Belmont County Crash

Troopers said unsafe speed caused a crash that killed a local businessman Tuesday.

Laco Pickens, 74, died after he was pinned under a Pickens Hauling truck, the family company he and his son ran.

The crash happed just before 11 a.m. when the garbage truck veered off of state Route 800, just off of Interstate 70 near Barnesville.

Many of the first responders were familiar with the family and their business, which made the recovery effort even more difficult.

"It's hard no matter when you notify someone of a death in the family, and it makes it a little bit harder when you know them," said the Barnesville Fire Department chief.

Troopers said the truck was most likely moving at a high rate of speed because it overturned before landing.

"There's a lot of speed involved for a truck to become upside down. Trucks are pretty heavy and to flip that over, it had to have a lot of speed," said Lt. Roger Norris of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Tuesday's crash marked the 16th fatal crash of the year for state police covering Belmont and Monroe counties.

Troopers said they are conducting special patrols on Interstate 70 and in other areas to try to prevent similar crashes.
