Troopers: Wrong-Way Driver Causes Head-On Crash; Alcohol Suspected

Police Suspect Driver Was Intoxicated

YORKVILLE, Ohio —

A trip down the wrong lanes of Route 7 proved dangerous in Yorkville Thursday night.

Sherman Carter, 78, of Adena, was driving the wrong way down Route 7 when he crashed head-on with Christa Carothers, 65, of Smithfield, police said.

Car parts were scattered all over the scene and the cars had to be ripped apart to get both drivers out.

"We were able to talk to the drivers of both vehicles before they were transported. We don't believe they're life-threatening injuries,” said Sgt. Shawn Yoho of Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Wells Township police said they got the initial call, but several agencies made it to the scene for the rescue and to keep another crash from happening. Traffic in the northbound lanes had to be shut down and diverted onto the public road exit.

Troopers still have investigating to do, but said they were pretty certain there's a reason Carter was driving the wrong way.

"We do believe alcohol was a factor in this crash,” said Yoho.

OSHP will turn the case over to the county prosecutor to determine whether aggravated vehicular assault charges will be filed against Carter. Carter's toxicology results were pending as of Friday morning.
