WETZEL COUNTY, W.Va. —

A commercial truck on W.Va. State Route 7 became snagged in a cable line on Tuesday, sending the lines toppling just feet from a playground where young children were playing.

The incident happened around noon at Wetzel County Center for Child and Family Development, about three miles from New Martinsville.

Witnesses said they saw the truck get snagged in the lines and take out a pole. Teachers who were with the children said there was a loud bang and then sparks everywhere.

"I just saw the line whipping (and) just kind of hunkered to the ground," said pre-K aide Cora Bower.

Teachers said they feared the lines had fallen onto the metal fence and that the lines were electrical. Fortunately, that wasn't the case, but teachers didn't know that at first and didn't take any chances.

Teachers safely evacuated the playground and got the children -- ages 3 to 5 -- back into the building and no children were injured.

Crews had to turn off electricity to the school so they could put up new poles, and spent the afternoon prepping new holes in the ground where the old ones were ripped out.

Yards of tangled wiring were the only remnants from an unexpected afternoon, one the teachers said children handled quite well.

West Virginia State Police in Paden City are handling the investigation. As of 4:30 p.m., NEWS9 had not been able to contact State Police to find out what caused the crash.

The condition of the truck driver was not immediately released.
