Clean up underway after truck crash spills oil into Ohio Co. creek

By Briona Arradondo and  NEWS9

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. —

Crews worked Sunday to clean up oil spilled into a small creek after a dump truck overturned on Route 88 in West Liberty.

Environmental crews used machines to clear the creek of the contaminated water and soil.

“They have acting trucks there that will skim off all the contaminated water. They will use fresh water to flush out the creek,” said Lou Vargo, the Ohio County Emergency Management Agency director. “Environmental samples will be taken to make sure that whole creek bed is completely decontaminated before they are allowed to leave."

Officials said the crash happened about 4:45 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Route 88 and Weidman Run Road. One person was injured and treated at the scene, Vargo said.

Several fire departments responded to the scene along with Ohio County EMA, officials said.

Barriers have been set along the creek contain the oil to the spill area. Precautions are also being taken for the threat to marine life.

"Anytime you have (chemicals), or in this case, the fuel oil into the creeks, there is an outcome or potential threat to any of the fish and any species in the creek," said Vargo.

The Department of Environmental Protection has also been notified, officials said.

Depending on the weather, officials said they hope to have the site completely clear by Monday. But first, crews will have to wait for test samples to see that the area is free of contamination, officials said.
