Truck Traffic Troubles Town

Residents Say Coal Trucks Are Damaging Roads

NEW ALEXANDRIA, Ohio —

Residents of the village of New Alexandria in Jefferson County are asking government leaders to consider placing weight and axle restrictions on County Road 19 to reduce coal truck traffic.

Resident Shane Wetherell says the trucks, belonging to Ohio American Energy run as much as 14 hours a day.

"(They) drag mud clear through town," said Wetherell. "When it rains, there's mud blown on the mailboxes."

Concerned residents sat down Thursday with their mayor and village solicitor to discuss their legal options.

The president of Ohio American Energy told NEWS9 his company is planning on using alternate routes, but they're waiting on permits that will allow them to do that.

They expect the permitting process could take the next eight to ten weeks.
