Tunnel Crews Work Double Shifts To Catch Up to Deadline

There are 40 days left for crews to meet the deadline set for work to finish on the eastbound lanes of the Wheeling Tunnels, but they have hit some bumps in the road and have had to make adjustments to catch up.

Crews have been working double shifts all week, and supervisors said they should know very soon if it will be enough to bring them back up to speed.

"We worked double shifts before when we were doing the demolition, and then that kind of ran out. We just started back up on double shifts this week,” said Sikora.

Friday, crews were working to grout the ceiling after removing the old tile. The new tile has been imported from Germany, and laying it will be the last step of major work. Then, crews will clean the entire tunnel and start paving before opening back up again, Sikora said.

”We have to sit down and see what's left to do, how much time, and can we add crews and days and hours to catch up," said Sikora.

Sikora said the double shifts are helping but they won't know if they'll be able to meet the original May 11 deadline until the supervisors and the contractor have a meeting in about two weeks. In the meantime, work continues day and night. One thing crews were thankful for -- beautiful days like Friday.

"It's nice to have the nice weather for a change and that helps a lot and we'll just have to get back on schedule," said Sikora.

Once the work is finished up in the eastbound lanes, crews will start all over again on the westbound lanes. That work is expected to start in January.
