Two In Custody After Man Beaten In Wheeling

Wheeling police said two men beat another man in broad daylight in a busy Wheeling intersection Friday.

Officers said a witness helped track down the suspects and stayed on the phone with dispatch until officers arrived at the scene on Wheeling Island about one minute later.

Soon after, police arrested Stanton Francis Hanchin, 24, of Bloomingdale and Craig Allen Eakle, 26, of Canton. Both men were charged with battery.

Chief Kevin Gessler said the victim said the incident was an armed robbery, but, as of 4 p.m., he said officers only had enough information and evidence to warrant a battery charge.

"The one thing that was reported was that there was obviously some type of physical altercation going on, so obviously there was some violence," Gessler said.

People who live near the scene at South Front and Virginia Streets, where the alleged battery took place, said they've seen some suspicious activity occasionally but nothing so brazen.

"I've heard of some fights and stuff, but somebody getting mugged or robbed like that on the corner, no. I'm definitely surprised," said Paul Adams.

The victim, who is from the area and in his mid 30s, was transported to the hospital and police said he is doing OK.

Gessler said investigators are still interviewing the victim and trying to get additional information from some witnesses that were at the scene.
