WEIRTON, W.Va. —

Two people were charged with child neglect creating a substantial risk of injury after police say a 9-month-old baby was found in a closet. Zakary Smith, 24, and Christina Pavlic, 26, both of Beaver Falls, Pa., were arrested Wednesday. Police said they were acting on a tip received by a Weirton detective the same day. "One of our detectives received information that a couple in the 4100 block of Washington Street may be keeping an infant in a closed closet," said Lt. Greg Moodie with the Weirton Police Department. "One of our patrol units went down to investigate. He asked to come in and did in fact find a 9-month-old female baby strapped in a car seat in a closet with the door closed." Investigators said the baby appeared to be good physical condition. "First time I've seen something like this," said Moodie. "Anything can happen. That's no place to put a child. And that's why they're under arrest. The baby is in the custody of Child Protective Services pending placement."
