Two Teachers Struck By Vehicle While Crossing Street To School

Two Ohio County schoolteachers were injured after they were struck by a vehicle while crossing the street.

The accident happened around 10 a.m. just outside of St. Michaels Parish School, where Bill and Barbara Heinz teach.

Police said Barbara Heinz is in a hospital with a broken collarbone and concussion. She is expected to stay in the hospital overnight. Bill Heinz was treated and released, police said.

The couple both teach piano class at the school.

The crash marks the second time a pedestrian has been struck by a vehicle in the same National Road crosswalk. Principal Marilyn Richardson said a couple of years ago, a teacher's aide was struck by a car there and suffered a broken leg.

"It's always been a very busy intersection, especially in the morning and at dismissal time," said Richardson.

Richardson urged drivers to take caution in school zones at all times.

"When there's a school zone, lights are flashing. There's a reason they're flashing and it's not just at dismissal time or arrival time. Kids leave and come all day for different reasons and I just think whether the lights are on or not, people need to get the message that they have to slow down," she said.

In a news release, the Wheeling Police Department officials said the investigation is ongoing. The release does not say if speed contributed to the crash.
