Tyler Co. family loses all belongings in house fire

By NEWS9 and Philip Stahl

PADEN CITY, W.Va. —

Members of a Paden City family lost all of their belongings when their house went up in flames early Thursday.

The Glendenning family escaped safely, but their home at 225 Rural St. was destroyed.

Debra Glendenning said she was going to sleep around 4 a.m. when she heard her husband yelling that the house was on fire. She said she immediately jumped out of bed and worked to find her way out through the thick smoke, ultimately being able to call 911.

Paden City, Sistersville and New Martinsville fire departments responded to the blaze. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but officials said it does not appear to be suspicious.

Glendenning said she thinks the fire started in the bathroom.

"(There was) a little heater that we had in our bathroom that we would turn on (during) the cold nights. We had it turned on low, but it still caused a fire," she said.

Even though they escaped with only the clothes on their back, she said she is "just thankful for everybody that has helped out and (for) the support. It's been great. We live in a nice little town here where we help each other out when we can."

She said, despite what happened, she's thankful for being alive and having a family who lives next door to stay with.

The Paden City Eagles Club is taking donations for Glendenning and her husband, including clothes. Donations can be sent to:
