Valley Native, Olympian, NFLer 'Jeep' Davis Passes Away

BARBERTON, Ohio —

Three-time Olympic gold medal hurdler Glenn "Jeep" Davis has died after a long illness.

He was 74.

Davis was born in Wellsburg and would become the first freshman to play for Follansbee High School's basketball team.

Davis was gold medalist in the 400-meter hurdles at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, and in the 400-meter hurdles and 1600-meter relay at the 1960 Rome games.

In 1958, Davis set world records in the 440-yard run and in the 400-meter low hurdles.

He holds Ohio State records for the outdoor 50-yard hurdles (6.1 seconds), and was an eight-time Big Ten champion.

Davis also played wide receiver for the Detroit Lions.

An athletic department spokesman said Davis died Wednesday at a hospice in Barberton.

Davis was a teacher and coach in Barberton for 33 years.

He is survived by his wife, Delores, three children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
