Vandals Hit New Steubenville Park

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

Starting Wednesday, gates will go up around the new Belleview Park in Steubenville after city leaders say vandals are destroying it.

“We have youngsters going into the park pulling out posts, beating on play equipment and trying to damage the new basketball court," said city manager Bruce Williams.

Williams said people are damaging the fences and driving on grass that isn't fully grown -- leaving tracks.

Residents spoke out to city council at Tuesday night’s meeting about their concerns over Pizza Pie Park as well.

"We have problems up there, and I see why there are problems now down at Belleview because there isn't anyone to watch over this," said a concerned citizen.

City leaders vow to step things up. Plans are in the works to install new cameras at the parks and the police have been asked to patrol more often.

"If we catch somebody, we're going to hold the parent responsible. We're going to bring them into this courtroom, they’ll appear before the judge and they'll pay for the damage they do to our public parks and facilities," said Williams.

There will be a grand opening ceremony for Belleview Park on Oct. 21, but if the vandalism continues, it's unclear how long it will stay open.
