Veteran Reacts To Conflict In Korea

WEIRTON, W.Va. —

Many Ohio Valley residents turned their attention to the Korean peninsula this week, including veteran Ernest Nicholas. Nicholas served in Korea in 1951. He said the memories from Korea are still vivid.

Nicholas said, "When one (of the enemy) would fall down, there would be five more picking up his gun to come after us. They were not good soldiers, but there were too many of them. They overwhelmed us."

The memories flooded back quicker when he heard that the tension between North and South Korea was increasing. North Korea most recently warned that joint US-South Korea military exercises could bring the peninsula "to the brink of war."

Nicholas said he can see only one solution to America's involvement on the Korean peninsula.

Nicholas said, "Stop going over there and trying to police the world. If we're in danger, let's get our nuclear arms ready. We can defend ourselves. We defended ourselves before. We can do it again."
