Bridgeport, OH —
Bridgeport's village council met on Tuesday night to try to tackle a number of issues and once again, it was a difficult night.
"What has transpired in the last hour. With the exception of the first 15 minutes is not beneficial to the residents of the village of Bridgeport."
That portion of a speech made by village solicitor Mark Thomas gives a taste of just how divisive things got during the council meeting. But Thomas' speech didn't appear to calm anyone down; over the course of the next half hour more speeches were made.
"The mayor should have the say of what he would want to do," said one resident. "It's alright if you guys vote against him or whatever because you do it every meeting."
Over the course of an hour and a half, virtually everything that was brought up for discussion caused an issue.
"What these things usually come down to is a personality conflict and there is no room for personality conflicts in village government," said Thomas.
Village officials tabled everything that came their way, from garbage rates, to new equipment, to committee formation, to meeting attendance. When the meeting was over, it was clear an argument between Mayor John Callarik and village council President David Smith was not settled.
"There's either a fundamental disagreement not personal, it's more based on political opinions and philosophies," said Smith. "And we were not elected to just jump on the train and agree with everything."
"Face it, he wants the mayor's job, and as long as I'm here he's not going to get it," said Callarik. "Because I work for the village of Bridgeport and they are my people here."
Village officials will have to come together soon. Over the course of the next several months they will be faced with difficult decisions in sewage, sanitation, and a variety of other issues.
