STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

Students at Franciscan University of Steubenville worked with a community group to make a version of the viral "Kid President Pep Talk" YouTube video addressing President Barack Obama. Instead, they created a "Kid Mayor Video Challenge" that asks city school students "What makes Steubenville awesome?"

The reason behind it all is to bring share the good about this city, which has seen negative publicity for many months.

"We watched the kid president video, and after watching that, I was like, 'Man, Steubenville needs a pep talk too,’” said Katie Gesto, of Mama Nita's Coffee House Ministry.

Gesto teamed up with the United Peace Movement on Communication arts students from Franciscan University students for the two-week project.

"It was really interesting seeing everyone come into the house. Just as we're filming, people just come into the house and say, 'Hi,' and say 'Oh, how are you doing?' There's a lot of genuine friendship here," said Matt Murkle, a Franciscan University student. "All the kids that we filmed, especially the second day, they all knew each other. And then everyone's parents were so willing to talk, and so the atmosphere really is great."

Community groups said the video challenge is important and its goal is to bring positive energy back to the city after months of negativity from recent events.

"God has great plans for our city, and there's so much potential here. There's no reason for us to be so down and thinking, 'Oh, there's nothing good that can come from Steubenville.' There's a lot of good. We've just got to come together," said Gesto.

Some city leaders said they are already on board with this, but Steubenville City Schools Superintendent Mike McVey said he will review the project and discuss with officials whether they will show the video in their classrooms and participate.
